AM Sermon Outline February 19, 2012 The Book of 1st Thessalonians:
The Little
Letter with the Big Footprint! 1st Thessalonians 1:1-10
1.
Groundwork for the letter:A. Written
by the Apostle Paul in approx. 50-51 A.D.B. Written
to the young, immature Christians in ThessalonicaC. Written
because Paul concerned about spiritual condition of these young believers. Many had been saved from life-time of pagan worship.
Paul had been able to spend only a few weeks there before he had to leave due to persecution2. Background of the letter:A. The city
of Thessalonica; a seaport city and the crossroads of major trading routes; a modern center of culture and religion; a most
wicked place. B. The church’s
beginning; founded by Paul on second missionary journey in Acts 17:1-9; Paul preached in the synagogue for three Sabbaths
and people, mostly Gentiles and women saved. Jews incited riot against Paul and he had to leave.C. Two issues about the church at Thessalonica1. People had no background of God2. Paul left before laying
solid foundation3. Paul first
concern? True Conversion!A. True conversion
changes the dynamic of your life.4-5; “ Knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God. For our gospel
did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance…” B. True conversion changes the direction of your life.6-9; “ And you became followers
of us and of the Lord, having received the word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became examples
to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe. For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in
Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.
For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols
to serve the living and true God…”C. True conversion changes the duration of your life.10; “And to wait for His Son
from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”4. Are you a only a church member or are you a Christian? A. True conversion is not temporary but a permanent spiritual decision. True conversion stands the text of
